Fights with Your Co-workers: How to Manage Disagreements at Work

Fights with your co-workers are unpleasant. But sometimes, things get out of hand, and disagreements are unavoidable. What do you do when it does happen?

Better communication can help resolve fights with your co-workers

You may be trying to resolve a personal issue or being a mediator. Whatever your role may be, it is always helpful to have a good grasp on the conflict. You cannot resolve the problem if you don’t understand why it happened. Therefore, go back to the root of the issue. Make sure you understand both sides of the conflict. Be sure that you have as much information as possible so that you have a firm grasp on the issue.

Discuss things over at a neutral place

When feelings are heightened, it’s always best to avoid external factors adding to it. So, select a peaceful and quiet place to have a conversation. A safe location can help people to be more willing to be vulnerable. At the same time, it is also important to make sure that one party is not more comfortable than the other at the place you have in mind. That can make the other party feel at a disadvantage. So, pick a neutral location.

Be willing to listen and hear what the other person is and is not saying

Fights with your co-workers are often the results of misunderstandings or due to tensions running high. If you misunderstand them even more, nothing will get done. Instead of a resolution, it can make matters even worse. So, become an active listener. Don’t let your attention wander, and be sure to ask questions and listen to their input without prejudices. Let them have their say without disturbing or cutting across to your your point heard. Try to truly listen to what they are saying. And sometimes this means reading between the lines.

Settle on a common goal

Sometimes when you are fighting, there is no winner. Which is why finding common grounds and compromising is important. Once you understand everyone’s point of view, try to find a goal that everyone is happy with. And then work together to settle on ideas that will help you to reach that goal. Working towards a common goal will help everyone to discuss their issues better so that they can reach the end result successfully.

Don’t ignore fights with your co-workers

Instead of brushing it off, confront the issue directly. If you leave things unresolved, negative emotions will get worse as time goes by. This can then affect not only your productivity, but also your work environment as well. Therefore, be sure to try to find a resolution as soon as possible. It is, of course, better to head off any potential issues from happening in the first place. But you can’t always avoid conflicts. So when it does happen, whether between you and another colleague, or between different parties without your involvement, actively work together to dissolve tensions.

Confront the problem, not your colleagues

When you are dealing with conflict, attacking your opponent is not going to help matters. Instead, it will just add more fuel to the fire. Keep this in mind when you are confronting the issue. The conflict happen because of a problem. So your focus should be on finding the root cause of the issue, and then working together to achieve a resolution. Not pointing fingers and playing the blame game.
