Balance college and working; how to handle a job while studying
Many college students prefer working part-time. After all, it’s a good way to add a bit of extra income to your finances. Not only that, you can even gain some work experience. But how can you balance college and working?
Tips to balance college and working
Colleges more often than not understand that students do need an additional source of income. Even so, finding a job that fits into your already packed schedule can be difficult. A good job lets you find the perfect balance between earning an income and meeting your educational needs.
If you are on the hunt for a part-time job as a student, there are a few things you should be on the lookout for
- Flexible hours
- The freedom to study when business is slow
These are some tips to help you balance college and working.
Your location matters
When you are searching for jobs, you have to consider locations. You may not realise it, but the commute can affect the way you balance college and working. For instance, you may live about thirty minutes away from your school. But if your part-time job has a more complicated route, at the end of the day, you will simply end up exhausted. Instead, try to find a job that doesn’t have a long commute from where you live. The extra time it’ll save can be used for doing something else.
Find a balance between college and working that works for you
Everyone has a routine that fits them best. You have to find what works for you. For instance, some people find it easier to do homework or study in the early mornings or during the hours before class. That leaves their evenings free to attend their part-time jobs. Or may find it easier to attend to your course work after your shift at work ends and during your days off. In any case, finding the routine that works for you early on will help you to manage your time better.
Prioritise your tasks
Multitasking can be good and does have its place. But sometimes it’s better to prioritise the tasks you have for the day and focus on one thing at a time. For instance, the middle of a busy shift at work is not the time to worry about your schoolwork. Nor is losing track of your coursework in favour of picking up more shifts a good idea. Finding a balance between college and working means knowing when to pay attention to the most important task at hand.
A balance between college and working allows for breaks
Even if you successfully juggle school and work, that’s not all there is to life. Don’t forget to take the time to relax and do things you enjoy simply for the job of doing things you enjoy. When you have some time to yourself, take a break and relax. Even on a busy day filled with exams and a shift that never seemed to end, you can find the time to treat yourself. Stepping away from Taking a step back from your busy schedule will help you to unwind and give you an extra boost of energy.
Find the right school and place of work
As mentioned before, schools are pretty understanding of students who wish to find a part-time job. Some schools even work together with local businesses to offer job opportunities for the students. Even if your college does not offer this assistance, you can still seek advice to make sure that your schedule allows time for your shifts at work. In the same manner, if you find a good workplace with a supportive manager, you can make sure that your work does not overlap with your classes.
